A lovely visit to the Stockholm Archipelago

Hej friends!
Stockholm is at it´s best at the moment. The sun is shining and everything is blooming. People are happy and tourists fill the streets. The ones who are still working are counting down to the start of their vacations and the parks and open-air restaurants are filled with happy people. It is SO different from how it is in the winter.

I had a lovely visit from Jelena, one of my best friends from Belgrade, and we decided to make an excursion to Fjäderholmarna, an island belonging to the Stockholm archipelago..

The Stockholm archipelago is vast

The Stockholm archipelago consists of numerous small islands (around 30 000) and many of them are reachable by boat. Ok, technically ALL of them are reachable by boat, but if you don´t happen to have your own boat with you, you can always take a ferry to some of the islands.

Fjäderholmarna, which loosely translates to something like ”The feather-islands”, is the nearest island from Stockholm city center and it takes only 20-30 minutes to reach there.

Buying tickets

The shipping companies that are in charge of the traffic to many of the islands are called Strömma and Waxholmsbolaget. On their websites you´ll find timetables and have the possibility to buy tickets.

A return ticket to Fjäderholmarna costs around 20 euro and It´s generally a good idea to buy tickets atleast the day before, especially for the early departures. We didn´t.. so we had to wait until the next day. But the next morning at 10.00 am we stood at berth 13 at Nybroviken, ready to board the boat to Fjäderholmarna!

A lot of people on the boat and some guys who didnt have a pre-booked ticket had to wait for the next one

Fjäderholmarna

The island that we visited is called Stora fjäderholmen (big feather-island) which is a bit misleading because the island it self is very small haha. The scenery is very beautiful though and the combination of the traditional red cabins / houses, the sea and the sun is very picturesque.

We strolled around the island. People were having picnics with their children on the cliffs and tourists were taking pictures of the surroundings. Families of canadian geese with small wooly chicklings walked by and we tried to not be in their way or scare them off. In a small bay small shops sold handcrafted items such as textile-works and glass items.

Venues

The island has a couple of semi-expensive restaurants and a café. We went to the café and ate cinnamon rolls and watched the sea and boats and people walking by.

And after that it was already time to return! We had booked the departure back to Stockholm city two hours later and time went very quick. Next time around we will book 3 hours!
