Today we are visiting the Swedish author August Strindbergs museum home here in Stockholm!
The museum is, as you probably already figured out, Strindbergs apartment, which was converted into a museum after his death in 1912.
August Strindbergs desk in his library. Very neat, very orderly.
Who was August Strindberg?
August Strindberg is one of Swedens most acclaimed authors.
During his lifetime he wrote at least 60 plays and 10 novels and was a prominent figure in the literary Sweden at the time. But he was also a drunkard and a trouble maker and while some people viewed him as a genius, others thought he was completely insane and should seek professional help!
August Strindberg and his daughter Karin
Except for booze, Strindberg was, as many of this time, also into alchemy and had many stormy relationships with various women. In his autobiographic book Inferno he writes about his alchemist pursuits to make gold and the existential crisis he went through during his years in Paris.
Later some doctors have speculated in if Strindberg was schizophrenic and was suffering from a paranoid psychosis during the time he wrote the book.
Location of the August Strindberg museum and good to know
The museum is located in the middle of Stockholms city in the end of the shopping street Drottninggatan. The closest subway is Rådmansgatan and you will have to take the green subway line to get here.
The tickets cost around 11 Euro at the time I´m writing this (2025) and the museum is closed on Mondays. If you want to see Strindbergs library which is not located in tha apartment but in the attic of the same building, you can join a guided tour.
August Strindbergs apartment
The museum resides on the 4th floor of a residential building. There is a small elevator and stairs. The house is over 100 years old and has beautiful art noveau / jugend details.
The leaded glass windows in the stairwell were made by Neumann & Vogel in Stockholm 1907
The interior design of Strindbergs apartment has the same style. A lot of green hues, wallpapers with nature motifs. Beautiful flowy chandeliers and a lot of nice patterns!
I just love that carpet!
It was a good visit! We learned new things about Strindberg and I loved the interior design of his apartment!
